Investing in the Future of Hospitality: Culinary Careers Program Awards Nearly $2.8 Million in Scholarships to the Next Generation of Culinary Leaders
This spring, culinary classrooms across the country became launching pads for the next generation of hospitality professionals.
Through the Culinary Careers Program (C•CAP) College Scholarship Cooking Competition, students from Arizona, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia trained for months to compete for life changing scholarships to some of the nation’s most renowned culinary and hospitality institutions, including Johnson & Wales, The Institute of Culinary Education, The Culinary Institute of New York at Monroe University, The Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management University of Denver, and the Culinary Institute of America.
C•CAP awarded $2,799,105 in scholarships and career development opportunities to a total of 144 students.
Of that total:
- $2,209,305 was awarded in institutional scholarships to graduating seniors
- $575,450 was awarded in cash scholarships
- $14,350 supported Boot Camp scholarships for high school juniors
Since 1990, C•CAP has awarded more than $79 million in scholarships, opening doors to careers in food & hospitality for under-resourced students across the country. The impact of the scholarship program extends far beyond financial aid.
The C•CAP College Scholarship Cooking Competition is one of the nation’s largest independent culinary and hospitality scholarship programs, designed to prepare students for real careers in the industry. Students sharpen technical kitchen skills, build confidence under pressure, receive mentorship from chefs and educators, and gain exposure to the professional standards of hospitality.
For high school juniors receiving boot camp scholarships, the journey begins even earlier. C•CAP’s summer boot camp program provides students with a refresher on kitchen fundamentals alongside accelerated job readiness training such as resume writing and interview preparation. Upon completion, students are placed into paid internships in professional kitchens where they gain handson work experience and begin building their professional network.
At a time when the hospitality industry continues to face workforce shortages and talent needs, the students represent the future of restaurant, hotels, and food businesses across the country.
“Hospitality is powered by people, and the future of our industry depends on investing in the next generation of talent. C•CAP is building a strong workforce pipeline for food and hospitality and one that reflects the communities we serve. These students are not only future chefs and hospitality leaders; they are the future of the industry itself.” — Christina Grdovic, Executive Director
One of the most meaningful moments of this year’s scholarship season came in New York where C•CAP alum Chef Cesar Gutierrez returned to award a scholarship in his own name. Years ago, Cesar stood in the shoes of students competing today, a young C•CAP student pursuing his culinary dreams. This spring he came full circle, investing back into the generation of students following the same path.
The moment reflected something deeply unique about the C•CAP community: students become alumni, alumni become industry leaders, and many return to mentor, hire, and support the next generation.
Throughout the spring scholarships ceremonies, C•CAP’s program directors shared stories of their students’ determination, many balancing school, work and family responsibilities while competing.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had through C•CAP and for the scholarship I received. This left me worry free and took away the financial stress. It gave me more excitement and much greater motivation to focus on my studies instead of worrying about the costs.” — Nolan Quiroz, C•CAP Los Angeles, full-ride scholarship recipient to Johnson & Wales University Providence
“C•CAP has truly changed my life. They’ve given me countless opportunities to go out and make connections and have not only opened an endless amount of doors for me in the culinary industry but also helped me grow as a person. I'm eternally grateful for this program. C•CAP For Life. — Alec Crist, C•CAP Philadelphia full-tuition scholarship recipient to Johnson & Wales University Providence
“Careers in hospitality are rarely linear. Every chef in this industry faces moments of reinvention and growth. What makes C•CAP special is that students don’t just gain technical skills or scholarships, they build a lifelong community. Whether they’re stepping into their first kitchen job, culinary school, entrepreneurship, or leadership roles years from now, C•CAP will always be a family they can rely on throughout their careers.” — Chef Marcus Samuelsson, Co-Chair
While 144 students received scholarships this spring, they represent part of a much larger national pipeline. Each year, C•CAP serves approximately 25,000 students nationwide through culinary education, job training, mentorship, apprenticeships, and career-connected learning opportunities designed to prepare young people for the hospitality workforce.
As C•CAP continues to expand nationwide, this spring laid bare that investing in students is investing in the future of hospitality itself. Thank you to every educator, chef, donor, and partner for making this scholarship season possible, and for opening doors to the next generation of culinary and hospitality leaders.
